Primal Rage

Recruiting new fighters. Growing the FGC.

Recently, after going out to a local bar to watch a Rockets game (born and raised in Houston) I brought a few people back to my apartment for a night cap. After a beer I was asked if we could play some video games. I'm sure they were expecting Call of Duty Ghosts or Halo or the like but I had other plans. I brought out a couple of arcade sticks and popped in Third Strike. After hours of intense matches (I'm new to 3S myself) my guests were left amazed at how much fun they were having with a fighting game. I think that simply exposing people to fighting games and playing locally will be the one thing that can truly help to grow the FGC and expand the interest in fighting games beyond the ultra competitive. What are your thoughts? What's the best way to expand our universe beyond tournaments?

UPDATED: Terrordrome quick combo Vid Vol. 1 & 2!!

Long time ago I played a demo of TerrorDrome, it had a few characters only and the gameplay was a bit stiff. Well in this last Halloween, the final version of the game was released, and while there are still some rough edges, the game has a decent combo engine that allows some good stuff, and then I recorded a short, basic combovid, I wish you all like it.

This time I used a well known horror game music track to give the vid more spooky mood. Please enjoy at 720p!

Xmen Children of the Atom for PSN, XBL

Hey fellow fighters, its been a long time.
I'm sure there is an older post dedicated to this great game but I can't find it?
I love everything about the game cota (characters, environments, SF fighting mechanics, music, etc). I played the arcade a lot way back when with my older brother (Sentinal vs Omega Red every match basically). Then 5 years back I bought the PSX port of cota ported by Acclaim, which is not a %100 conversion of the game as stated on the back of the case, lol. It suffers from slow down and I noticed alot of character frames missing (don't even get me started with XvsSF on PSX, lol.)
Why wouldn't they release this game in Marvel vs Capcom Origins? Cota, XvsSF, and MSHvsSF deserve to be in origins? Now the chances of getting this game remastered in online HD are slim to non.
I'm gonna give Capcom a great idea; Marvel vs Capcom Origins Chapter 2 ( games include, Xmen COTA, Xmen vs Streetfighter, and MSH vs Streetfighter).
Until then, I will play my crappy PSX port of cota, or save up enough money to buy the arcade cabinet.

Looking to get back into a fighting game ...what should it be ?

I really liked Marvel vs Capcom 3 but I ended up playing other games when ultimate came out and never really put enough time into it . What fighting game is best competitively right now and community wise ? Is it still mainly UMVC3 and SSFAE ? I own both of these games. I am an avid/player watcher of Dota 2 LoL and SC2 so having a big community is important to me from what I have seen of fighting tournaments the fans/atmosphere is extremely amazing like nothing ive seen. If I was going to sink a massive amount of time into UMVC3 or SSF4 Id really like for there to be a lot of pro streams and tournaments to help me improve and for entertainment SS4 seems to be winning that category.

It seems to me that SS4 is the bigger game for a longer period of time, but I loved MVC3 ..what are the pros and cons with each game ? Is UMVC3 worth playing still ? Is the community large enough and the game balanced enough ? Or should I head straight to SS4 especially since ultimate is coming soon ?

Kazuya and Geese: separated at birth?

$
0
0
Another random thought, concerning two of my favorite fighting game villains.
Feel free to correct my info...

-their PLAYABLE debuts were only about a year apart...Fatal Fury Special 1993, Tekken 1994

-both are characters in SIX canon games

Kazuya
T1,T2,T4,T5,T5:DR,T6
Geese
FF1,3,RB,RB2,96,2006

Don't know if DR is canon or a retelling of T5.
Don't know if KOF 2006 Geese is canon. And, FF:Wild Ambition is a retelling of FF1. Not sure how canon it is...

So, maybe they're both in FIVE canon games.

-both characters have young and old versions

-both are gangst- er...uh..."businessmen" in charge of large, internationally known, CORRUPT organizations.

-both have primary costumes that have changed very little over the past 15 years (Geese -> orange pants, Kazuya --> white pants)

-when not wearing said costumes, both wear expensive powersuits. And, both work them VERY well.

-both are murderers (Geese---> Jeff Bogard, Kazuya --> Eddy Gordos dad)

-both are "Disney villains"...completely evil with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

-both have rivalries with loud-mouthed, blonde-haired Americans that punch REALLY hard (Geese -> Terry, Kazuya --> Paul)

-both have been behind the kidnappings of innocent women (Geese-->Yuri Sakazaki, Kazuya--> Michelle's mother)

-both have a habit of moping around with arms crossed, and mumbling insults at people. And, Kazuya's maniacal laugh in his T4 ending is remarkably similar to Geese's laughing winposes...especially in KOF2006. Actually, all of Geese's KOF 2006 intro's and winposes could easily be used by Kazuya.

-both like to call opponents "pathetic"

-both tell opponents to "die!" after beating them.

-both like holding opponents in the air by the throat with one hand (that's really hard to do...especially to Marduk and Franco Bash)

-both rose to power through attempted murder (Geese-> Jeff Bogard, Kazuya->Heihachi)
Heihachi was lucky/angry/loud enough to survive, though.

-both were overthrown by revenge-driven opponents who were angry at the above mentioned murder attempts.

-after being overthrown, both were replaced by blood relatives. (Geese-->half-brother Krauser, Kazuya-->father Heihachi)

-both fell to their "deaths" from great heights TWICE...yet both are "alive" and playable in the most recent editions of their respective series'.

-both control wind (Geese: Reppu-Ken, Kazuya: Wind God Fist)

-both control electricity (Geese: Thunder Break, Kazuya: Electric Wind God Fist)

-both have had inexplicable "relations" with angelic, otherworldly women who have since disappeared mysteriously.

-both have sons who were trained and guided by their worst enemy. (Geese's son was trained by his nemesis Terry Bogard, Kazuya's son was trained by his nemesis Heihachi)

-both have sons who hate them with a passion...yet, begrudgingly fight with a similar style. (Geese -> Rock, Kazuya -> Jin)

-both have sons with wings.

-both have sons who were on the verge of murdering a blood relative...only to be stopped by the possibility that...gasp...mother is still alive! (Rock almost kills Uncle Kain, but stops when Kain suggests that Mother Marie is alive. Jin almost kills Grandpa Heihachi, but is suddenly stopped by visions of Mother Jun)

-both have sons with demons within...both have sons trying to resist the evil legacies of their fathers...both have sons who eventually succumb to that evil. (Rock joins Kain in his Garou ending, Jin goes frickin' ape-spit in T6)

AND, last but not least...

-both have SUPERPOLICE sniffing around their organizations (Hon-Fu and Lei Wulong...both Jackie Chan wannabes.)

The best thing about all these similarities is that they don't seem intentional. I mean, there are millions of Ryu clones out there...Bruce Lee wannabe clones...Chun-Li clones...and the imitation is usually obvious. But, Geese and Kazuya? I don't think SNK or Namco even knew the other existed. SNK was all about Capcom, while Namco was busy fighting with Sega VF. The two companies aren't on the same wavelength.

It's as if Geese and Kazuya independently developed into the same character, without any guidance at all. Like fate...

And, it looks like their sons inherited the path of similarity...

Hope Garou 2 comes out so we can see if this theory holds water...

What do you think?

EDIT:
-both have large, distinguishing scars
credit: Are_you_okay?!

-both have half/step brothers that don't care for them much (Geese -> Krauser, Kazuya -> Lee)
credit: Are_you_okay?!

-both have Super Seiyan versions of themselves (Geese -> Nightmare Geese, Kazuya -> Devil Kazuya)
credit: Dark Geese (of course)

THE EMULATION SPEED ISSUE.
There has been alot of debate about the running speed of HF under emulation. For those who don't know, HF runs faster than the origonal arcade board under emulation (within Mame & Winkawaks) this is because the speed of the game in HF was linked to the CPU speed of the board (or something like that). I have repeatedly timed the full round 'time out' matches of the tourney vids I'm posting, and the correct emulation using the fantastic old Callus Emulator. I've concluded that a round (going by when the clock starts & finishes) is around:
57 SECONDS
In both Mame and WinKawaks under normal settings a round will last approx
46.5 SECONDS
clearly a significant speed inrease, and 'very' noticable when played side by side. Thankfully there is an emulator (besides the fantastic but defunct 'Callus') that runs the game at the correct speed, 'nFBA'. For more info see ONLINE PLAY section at the top of the page for more info:

Darkstalkers 4 should look like...

Toughest females in fighting games

$

Now female fighters are a staple in fighting games. However the vast majority have the proportions of a sports illustrated swimsuit model rather than a fighter. You'll notice in women's boxing and mma, that these women are often fairly muscular (not close to males of course) and somewhat broad shouldered.

So which female fighting characters actually physically look like they could kick ass? I'll get things started with...

Makoto. Notice the fairly broad shoulders and heavily muscled arms. She isn't overly skinny either, but of a medium athletic build. Also, this....

Im looking for something about 50 inches that will have pretty good picture but will have very little lag. I need a new TV anyway so basically what stats actually matter for game performance. Does 600 hz really mean anything ? Would a TV that could do 120fps actually matter for fighting games like SSF4 PC/Ps3( I own both but will probably be main on PC by the time I get a new TV) or do they only go up to 60 fps anyway ?

Info on the Old School SF Scene?

I was wondering what the SF scene was like way back in the days of SF2. It'd be cool if some of the older boys put down some of their memories. Actually I specifically wanted to ask about this dude Tomo. My friends say he used to play around where I live (so cal), and was generally regarded as the best 'round here. Hell, I might have gotten my ass kicked by him and not even known it back then. So my questions are: Why did he quit, and where the hell is he nowadays? I guess I can ask the same thing about Thomas Osaki, who also seems to be a god. But it'd also be nice if some of the newer gamers got to know how it was like back then.

DARK AWAKE aka CHAOS BREAKER, on SALE on Jap PSN NOW!! (ReadTheFirstPost)GARAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Old thread: http://shoryuken.com/f2/chaos-breaker-eolith-coming-psn-239722/

FAQ and HOW GET
Spoiler:
What is Chaos Breaker?
Chaos Breaker is awesome.

What is Dark Awake?
Dark Awake is Chaos Breaker.

Wow, what do I need and how can I get it?!
It's as simple as buying a game from an online retailer, all you need is a PS3, any will do, and an internet connection.

Dark Awake is a PSN game, only available off the Japanese PSN store. Getting to the Japanese PSN store is easy. As easy as getting to the US PSN store. Just make another PSN account, but instead pick Japan as your region of residence. Here's a youtube video that I used to help me through: . Some extra notes, the video says to make up an email address, but I would suggest to use a real email address (I used a different one from my US account. I didn't check to see if PSN allows two accounts to an email.) that way you can get notifications about your account, like points added, or purchases and password changes. That can (maybe?) be useful if you decide to engage in account sharing.

Making an account, that's the easy part. As for the next step, I've only been a PS3 owner for about 5 days, but as I understand it, to make purchases off the Japanese PSN store, you either need a Japanese credit card OR get some sort of Japanese PSN point card. I had a friend in Asia buy me a point card and email me the code. And then I just waited for Dark Awake to apear on the store, brought it, and downloaded it. And that was my experience getting Dark Awake. Easiest import I've ever done.

I hear that people without the asian-connection buy cards off import stores, like play-asia. Play-asia in particular, I hear people say that they provide the option of forgoing shipping and they'll email you the codes instead. If someone wants to write a more general guide, or expound further, go for it. I'll put it in this post.

Moon runes scare me, what's this gamesharing I hear people talking about?
The other way of getting the game is to get it from someone who already has it. People call it gamesharing. I'm still new to this PSN thing, so I've only done this with friends I've known for years and trust. But as far as I can tell, it's more like account sharing. You give them your account info, they log on on their PS3 and download your remaining shares (aka, backup downloads).

Where is VS mode?
This is the barest port I've ever seen. There is no VS mode, you'll have to do it the old fashion way and play 2p in Arcade mode. But even though this port has much to be desired, the game is still awesome. I suggest you construct a cabinet around your PS3 for maximum arcade authenticity.

How to select original Ramda and Sandra sprite:
Hold the select button while picking Ramda or Sandra.

Where are the graphic filters? / Where is widescreen? / How do I get rid of the side bezels? / Was this a Super Nintendo game? / Why do the graphics look so ass? / The pixels? Why the pixels?! / Is this Killer Instinct?

The game is originally an arcade game, from 2004. It ran on Taito's Type X (That's X, not X2) hardware. The hardware has a max output of 640x480, iirc. So widescreen was never even an option during the game's development. Since the side bezels still show up on non widescreen displays, the game's native resolution was probably that weird ratio that a lot of old arcade games ran in.
Either you are playing on an unfathomably large TV or you are playing on the extremely inferior "Original" graphics setting.
Do this:

Go to the 2nd to last option at the main menu. This is the Game Option menu.
Once you are in here, go to the 3rd option down (the middle one), click it.
In here, highlight the option directly below BGM and SE, and swap from ????? to ????.
I'm playing on a 32" Samsung HDTV and it looks fantastic, especially considering the game isn't exactly some big budget fighter.

I play the game on my old CRT and the game looks great, probably as intended. I've seen the game on some omega HD displays and man are those pixels sharp!

How do I play? / What are the mechanics? / What's all this clashing bullhoney? / Warcraft?

Some of us have been video scrubs for the first 6 years of this game's life, many of us can't read Japanese, and all of us have only just recently been able to get our hands on this game. We're about just as noob as you. Talk about it in this thread!
