MLP: Fighting Is Magic - A Fighting game for manly men only (New characters from MLP creator?!)

$

The 1st thread was closed because of shitstorms and drama. I know ponies are a delicate issue here but please refrain from unnecessary comments.

From the FAQ:

Q: Why Fighting ponies?
A: Why not?

Q: But...why ponies?
A: We like ponies. Ponies are cool.

Q: Are you new to the Gaming Developing Scene?, Not sure I’ve heard of you before.
A: Mane6 as a group is. Fighting is Magic is our first collaborative effort. The DevTeam members have been around and participated in other projects individually.
All of us are seasoned Fighting Game players, though. We’ve a fair idea of what we want to do in our game and how to reach it. Don’t let the “first project ever” fool you ;)

Q: Will there be combos?
A: Indeed there’ll be.

Q: Will there be Supers?
A: Ee-yup.

Q: And projectiles?
A: Indeed.

Q: Local VS only, or is there netplay?
A: We’ve both Local and Online Versus mode planned.

Q: How will the VS multiplayer work? Is there a central HUB/Server to which we connect to?
A: There is a HUB, but it is not central. We’re using MTSP, a netplay client based on Lunaport, with improved netplay and an integrated chat available; Once you’ve downloaded the client, you’ve the option to set your own “server” or of acting as a client, for a Max of 100 connections (that we’re aware of). You can set more than one Lobby Host in your computer, provided they’re in different ports.

Q: How many characters will there be?
A: 17 Characters in total, with the Mane 6 (Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash) playable at release.

Q: And the other 11?
A: They’ll be released in game updates in a semi-regular fashion after Launch.

Q: Why only 17?
A: Several reasons. Mainly, that we wanted to focus on quality over quantity. We’d rather release 17, solid, balanced characters than four dozen palette-swap clones.

Q: Ok, I’m sold. How much will this game cost me?
A: Oh boy. Well, prepare your wallet, because this totally awesome game costs a grand total of $0.00, and it can be… wait… what?… yes, you heard right. Zero dollars and Zero Cents: That is to say. Abso-pony-lutely free.

Q: … What’s the catch?
A: No catch!, really. The game was planned from the start to be freeware. That doesn’t mean we’re half flanking the job, though, we intend to release the best game possible.

Q&As from the live stream:

Q: Will this be at EVO2012?
A: We don't think so but it would be cool lolololol.

Q: This looks weird.
A: The graphical effects will be handled last in development. Polishing the characters, gameplay, balance etc. will be done 1st.

Q: When is it coming out?
A: All we can say is "soon".

Back to the thread- So far the game kinda looks like a 1v1 mvc3, only w/o huge damage and comeback mechanics.
There are wall bounces and ground bounces, limited to 2 in a combo.
One of the 2 revealed characters is a pixie rushdown, the other is a zoner with some moves inspired by MB's Aoko. (The devs said it)

american equivalent of x mania?

Hello all,

Lately, I have been considering throwing a specialized or classic only fighting game tournament for individuals that still love and enjoy games a generation prior(sometimes more then one lol).

I want to do something for the comunity that I grew with and give these games a legacy tournament ala x mania for st or dcc for vs.

The question is though: is there enough interest to make it "worth" everyones time? Are there enough of us still around to make the event worthwhile?

The main games I was looking at are cvs2, 3s, mvc2 and st. Id love to host more if possible (vs, jjba ggac+r, etc).

Id love to hear everyones thoughts or advice.

P.s. This is a classic fighting game group I started on fb, feel free to join if interested.

A couple years ago I played a lot of MVC3 and a bit of a couple other games, and I got pretty decent before losing access to my 360. I haven't played any fighters in over a year, and I really miss it. The problem is, I have a very small amount of both money and time. All of my gaming, as little as there is, is on PC, so that's what I'm going to stick with for now. The fighters I can get on Steam that I'm interested in are Skullgirls, KOF 13, and Street Fighter 4 - in fact, KOF is 50% off this weekend so I'm just going to go ahead and grab it right now for $15. Obviously there's no way in hell I'm playing them on a keyboard, so I'll need to invest in a controller or joystick. Fightsticks are sooooo damn expensive, though, like at least $275 for a good one as far as I've seen. I could always get a gamepad, I guess; I was pretty good at MVC3 on the 360 controller, but I definitely had some major execution problems keeping me from physically being able to do certain things. I'd much rather get an arcade-style joystick.

If I do end up getting a TV and a console soon, it's definitely going to be a PS4 so I don't have to pay for Xbox Live. Will a PS3 Fightstick still work on a PS4? I really want to eventually be able to go back and play those games that aren't on PC like MVC3 and Soulcalibur V.

I guess this turned out to be more of a rant than a question, sorry, so does anyone have some general advice for me?

If you guys hate Street Fighter IV so much why is it the most played game at EVO?

The FGC will never say Street Fighter 4 is the best fighter on the market. I'm always seeing Street Fighter mocked here.

I'm not defending the game, but it should make sense if the majority of FGC hates this game it shouldn't have many players at EVO.

The TMNT Tournament Fighters (SNES) Thread: TF Revelations

tmnttfarcprotomarquee1.png

What is “TF”?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tournament_Fighters

TMNT:TF or simply “TF” is more commonly used within the fighting game community to refer to the Super Nintendo (SNES) version, which is considered to be the “superior” of the three (NES/GENESIS). As specified in the thread title, the SNES version is generally the main focus here, although brief mention of the NES and Genesis/MegaDrive versions does pop up occasionally.

People play this competitively?!

Indeed! Fighting game enthusiasts tend to give pretty much any game a chance and are willing to invest time into the games they enjoy, breaking apart the intricacies of the engine and game mechanics as well as developing on the evolution of character matchups.

The areas where competitive play seems most consistent are within Venezuela and parts of New York City. Both scenes have relatively smalls groups but also have strong, hardcore players who have established a vast understanding of the gameplay and character match ups.

Although rare, TF does manage to get some competitive play (usually as a side event) at the larger major tournaments. Players can sometimes be seen mashing away on SNES “dog bones” (whenever available) or more commonly, settling for emulated play wherein players attach their own preferred peripherals for optimal performance (Yes, it’s that serious). For the most part, it’s usually for the nostalgic value.

Where can I view high-level gameplay?

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2F5BBFFE1D620C49&feature=plpp
(Playlist compiled by ThatSoleGuy)

Is it a hard game to get into?

Definitely not. Being a product of the “SF clone wars” of the 90’s TF, like many other fighting games around that time, plays very similar to Street Fighter II in many respects. Much of the game play focuses heavily on elementary spacing and footsies. Because roughly 7/10ths of the cast possesses a projectile in some form, more often than not players will battle to gain momentum and positional advantage by means of fireball wars. The characters with “weaker” projectiles tend to have to rely on good reads, closing distance and holding position with stronger normals/pokes. In matches where fireballs aren’t as relevant, the footsie game becomes more pronounced.

Combos in TF are far from demanding with bread & butter combos averaging 3-5 hits. Far less time will be needed to actually practice combos/B&B’s and more focus being placed on learning character match ups, counter situations, advantageous situations, and building up reaction speed.

The button layout for TF is also very convenient as there are only two punches and two kicks to worry about (that’s two less than SF!). “Sure-kill Techniques” or Special Moves are none out of the ordinary and assuming you’ve played at least one (traditional) fighting game at least semi-seriously, commands like QCF/236, DP/623 or charge b, f, should be very familiar. “Ultimate Arts” or Super Moves require even less effort as you just simply input Heavy Punch+Heavy Kick with full meter.

I’m kind of ass at “old school” fighters. Any tutorial or combo videos to point me in the right direction?

This game is too poverty to have tiers, right? …Right?

Tiers are what you make of them (I guess *shrug*). The majority of the community, however, seems to agree on the “strongest” characters being Armaggon and Raph while the “weakest” is without a doubt War. People have also argued that C.Shredder, Wingnut, and Mike are also potentially “very strong” characters. Very little data has been comprised to support these arguments though (I.e. no demonstrative play and/or speculation from “inactive players”)

There’s no one I can play locally. Is there netplay available?
Hell yeah!

(MORE INFO)

Ok, I just found out that this game is as broken as an antique doll in the hands of a toddler. How do I deal with all the “cheap stuff”?

Simple answer: Deal with it.

Less douchebaggy answer: Browse through the thread and see what info you can find on matchups and countering seemingly-impossible-to-deal-with situations. Players from all over have compiled data of all kinds and reported their findings to the community. There’s a good chance you’ll find an answer to what you’re looking for. More importantly: KEEP PLAYING AND TRYING NEW/DUMB THINGS. You may see the phrase thrown around a lot on this thread (usually by myself): “TF IS ALWAYS EVOLVING”. This is because it’s 100% true. While TF is old, it doesn’t have a huge following and new info and discoveries don’t pop up often as a result. As people tend to play more and against a variety of players, ideologies of matchups and optimal play will shift and take on new forms before becoming something more concrete. Play and explore, nothing is truly “dumb” until proven otherwise a thousand times over (IMO).

“Regional differences”? Which is considered to be the better of the two?

USA, USA, USA!

But seriously though. Again, the game is not supported on a large enough scale to come to a conclusion on the matter. The community consensus though is the US title. The JP release has a few cosmetic changes as well as character tweaks that may or may not influence how the character is used.

Versions that exist are USA, Euro, German, and Australian versions which seem to be 100% exactly the same (don’t quote me though!) and the Japanese version (titled Mutant Warriors) which has changes that more or less apparent than the other international releases. While beta versions of TF exist, it’s not recommended for competitive play for obvious reasons.

WHY IS NOT SF2CE THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGHTING GAME OF THE HISTORY IN THE LIST OF EVO?

$

0
The real old school figting ask the EVO why they have not included in their listings to major combat game of all time?, Street fighter 2 champion edition?, A real game history, this figthing game was the creator of the mirror match, and the reversal attack, first game that made a real difference between Ryu and Ken, was the game that caused the fever for the figting in the 90's, is the most cloned game history and sales of the same have been one of the highest in the history of the Fighting Games. It was the game that gave birth to Balrog, Vega, Sagat and Bison.
The real old school Fighting continues worldwide playing it offline and online using emulators like arclive, SuperCADE and GGPO, so it is important to inform the EVO than last year 2012 was held in Brazil, a South American sf2ce offline:

http://www.capcom-unity.com/trancas/blog/2013/03/15/confira-a-final-eletrizante-do-torneio-sul-americano-de-street-fighter-ii-champion-edition
and this year 2013 will be held in Chile sf2ce world in the city of Santiago.
http://www.streetfighterchile.com/
Important to remember that the world has SF2CE top level professional players, among which it is worth mentioning the following: USA: Ghazni, Erick, GuileRyu, Korea: Geoemuken, Vampire, Mbison, redrabbit, Fantastic Ryu China: Ziaochazi, Dahuzi, Turkia: Darksider, Paintkiller, Brazil: Renan Red Kin, Fernando Street Gyn, Chile: Devaud, Lad Cobra.
See the next link:
http://rankingbr.jimdo.com/entrevistafantasticryu/

China has more than 100 professional players and Corean sf2ce have 50 players like Brazil.
Request EVO to include the father of the Fighting games Street Fighter 2 champion edition, in their lists to vote for our favorite fighting game, this game is unmatched!. The true old school world community would greatly appreciate it!.
thanks

Ruin my day: why can't Soul Calibur be the best 3D fighting game ever?

$

I have my opinions of things like anyone else, but ultimately I'm always on the road for more knowledge. To that end, sometimes one must face the bitter truth.

So, having said all that, I must know: Soul Calibur is my favorite 3D fighting game but no one ever seems to agree. So then...why is it not a popular opinion?

Be as brutally honest and analytical as you have to be in order to make your point. I just want to finally see this game for what it actually is and not what I think it is.

What Are Specific Countries "SPECIALTY" Games?

$

I was just looking at this Tekken stream and it just kinda randomly came into my head "what countries are the "best" in what games?"

I was thinking roughly:

US - Marvel 2, Marvel 3
France - Soul Calibur?
Japan - Guilty Gear
Mexico - King Of Fighters
Korea - Tekken

Is this a generalization that rides the line of being racist? Then again, I'm pretty sure the US is the best in Marvel 2. I'm also sure Korea is top 2 for Tekken.

I was just curious I'm sure theres some real explanation as to why these countries excel at some games and not other.

Nothing extremely serious, I'm just thinking out loud. I'm curious for countries like China, Canada, Brazil and UK.

Can someone tell me what this is? (SNK/KoF related...)

Got ahold of these randomly. I'm a fan of the series, but I really have no idea what these are. Obviously there is a keychain in one, and the mats look like some kind of board game. Any information someone can give me, or at least the name of what this product is? Thanks!!

Will 2.5D fighting games become the standard in the future

$

With games like Street Fighter abandoning 2d sprites for 3d ones does anybody believe this might be the future for fighting games . Now Kof 12 had the same development time as Street Fighter but it lacks the polish and personality of previous King of Fighters had compared to Street Fighter 4 carefully kept the identities of there characters the same. In my personal opinion 2.5d might become the standard to the general gaming populace but for more seasoned and experience players 2d will remain the status quo.

Which developer would be better suited to revive Eternal Champions...

I know, I know...one of the WORST-PLAYING fighting games EVER, BUT...there's no doubt in my mind that the POTENTIAL was there (could have been Sega's Killer Instinct)!

Within the genre, the story, characters, & final boss challenge are (IMO) second to none! The soundtrack was also AMAZINGLY dark & moody (LOVE the Title, Character Biographies, & Eternal Champion themes)! The problem with Eternal Champions was always the gameplay!

After seeing the awesome work Double Helix has done with Killer Instinct (minus Orchid's face & outfit), I was leaning towards them being THE developer to potentially revive Eternal Champions! BUT...then I thought about how big of a factor the story is in Eternal Champions & what NetherRealm had done with MK9 & Injustice in terms of gameplay, story, & cut scenes & thought...WOW! They can totally capture the essence/lore of Eternal Champions as well!

Anyways, curious to see what you guys think! And if Double Helix or NetherRealm happens to be reading any of this, grab the license! Buy it off of Sega! Whatever! Just revive this classic & show its TRUE potential or do a crossover with KI or MK please! It is my dying/gaming wish! Thank you.

Avatar Fighter Online

Hi all, just a note to let folks know Avatar Fighter Online was released today and available in the XBOX Indie Game section for 80 MSP ($1).

What is it? Basically can be described as a mix of Mortal Kombat / Street Fighter with your xbox avatar as a fighter. You can choose what special moves your avatar will use (2 regular, 1 super).

I hope this is okay to post here, if it's not I apologize in advance!

The New MvC1 Discussion Thread: Is Marvel 1 considered bad?

$

Mahvel 2 and 3 garner unfathomable degrees of hype and are extremely popular within the community. Yet, the original MvC is apparently on the opposite side of the spectrum. There is very, very little information or coverage on the game, it is rarely ever discussed, and most importantly: no one is playing it.

This disappoints me personally because I find the original to be the most enjoyable out of the bunch, yet it is quite literally dead. I'm just curious as to why that is.

Killer Instinct First Impressions

Hi guys - big fighting game fan..who is a total noob - anyhow spent 2 and a half hours today with the new xbox and thought I'd let you know my impressions of the new KI.
The build I played only had 4 of the characters available to play with their respective backgrounds: Sabrewulf, Jago, Thunder and Glacius.
You've already seen the graphics are nice enough and that sound design is top notch but coming in to this I was worried about the feel of the game. I was a huge KI fan back in the day and this is my main reason for getting the console.
It's slick - super slick - incredibly responsive - the new D pad is the best I've used - not even sure I'll bother with a fightstick - all the characters feel completely different from each other. There was a ton of people at the event interested in KI (Dead rising was the other game that was seeing the most interest out of the launch games they had available to play). The combo system works brilliantly with the combo breaker/counter breaker interplay being excellent at keeping the whole thing feeling very intense (vs. Marvel where sometimes you are just stuck waiting in case someone messes up their combo). I loved how when a round ends you can still move your characters around - meaning if you get in on a zoning champ it doesn't reset you to near max range ala Injustice.
All moves look and feel amazing - very solid - thunders moves feel like they have so much impact it's epic. I wasn't blown away by the ultra combos - I think standard combo's with shadow moves felt more impactful. At one stage we were playing winner stays on and it was brilliant the feel of it going back to days of old in the arcades =)

Anyhow, just thought I'd share - and hopefully reassure anyone else who is a KI fan, you won't be disappointed. Yes only 8 champs released but they all feel very unique (not just reskins with slightly different frame data as is seen in some games). One of the main things I think is great is their pricing model - yes I'll just buy the version that unlocks everything but there will be a ton of people who will be trying fighting games again who haven't played them for a long time and there will also be a load of people who are playing this as their first experience of a fighting game. The system has the beauty of being able to do cool stuff for noob button mashers but the nuances for mastery that I think it's going to work great at expanding the amount of people playing fighting games, which can only be a good thing. Yes you will initially play 20 matches vs jago till you get enough wins to stop playing people just trying out the game and start being matched up against others and yes till the next chapter is released next year there is a very limited number of characters and yes you'll have no single player..but most importantly the game is good, VERY good.

Look forward to seeing other KI fans online - It's awesome and I can't wait for the next 2 weeks to pass. =)

I just released a new version that raises the quality of the game, still many planned mechanics and content to add, though

This is the new and shorter trailer
